For my followers that don’t know this, I love reading books/stories, short vignettes.
A while back and by total accident I found a story on tumblr that would change part of my life, make me laugh, cry but most of all gain me a friend.
While I know we all are “family” here there are those…
Thanks, my friend. That was a really nice thing to share with your followers. I know how you feel, too. I’ve definitely added to my own family of friends through this experience. I’m glad it could do the same for others!
Also, when I posted the birthday video the other day, I was stupid and getting ahead of myself. Ya’ll haven’t heard that song in the story yet. Whooopsie. Hopefully you still figured it out… I guess it was pretty obvious.
Thing is, you probably won’t notice any difference when using Tumblr because it was all updated automatically on their side. So you should be able to just click around like always.
I also updated the theme used at all of the stories to the newer Optica theme. It’s much easier on the eyes and the font is much bigger. That just seemed to make sense for sites that are so word-based. Let me know what you think.
And finally, I created an email address at the new domain that you can use to contact me directly, if you so desire. You can reach me, as always, through the Ask/Fan Mail options on Tumblr. But now you can also email me at email@example.com.
I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. And now… back to writing.
I created a playlist with the soundtrack (so far) for these stories in Spotify. Feel free to give it a listen and, if you’re into that sort of thing, give it a follow. I’ll be updating it as the story continues.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
The Joker is a live version which I don’t care for at all. But it’s the only one available on Spotify. Apologies.
Spotify didn’t have Anne Murray’s Now and Forever. So I subbed another Anne Murray love song in its place.
Spotify didn’t have any Derek James (which isn’t surprising… he’s not well known). So that song is, unfortunately, unavailable.
Question: In the Character's Page, who is Brett? And Tucker? Also, it says that Rich is "Trevor's friend." I thought he was "Brian's"?
Both Brett and Tucker and minor characters (Tucker is VERY minor, in fact).
Brett is mentioned here and here. He’s only really mentioned because he’s a link between Brian and Trevor’s lives. Brett dated Carey (Trevor’s part of the link) and Chris (Brian’s part of the link). Neither of them knew one another at the time… so it was just an odd coincidence I decided to throw in. But, you really had to be paying attention to catch the link. There are a lot of little things like that sprinkled throughout that no one’s caught onto yet ;-)
Tucker is only mentioned once, briefly, in passing. Honestly, he probably doesn’t need to be on the character page. But at the time I initially created that page, I wanted every single name that’d ever been mentioned to be there.
And you’re right… Rich is Brian’s friend. I think my brain and fingers disconnected when I was typing. Haha. I’ve corrected it. Thank’s for the head’s up!
Awwwwwww that cake is soooooooooooo cute!!!! And the pumpkins, so.... ugh, this is too cute!!! By the way, I'm the Filipino guy that migrated to the US(don't know if you remembered that in one of our chats, though). Anyway, I'm celebrating my first ever Halloween here, and the picture just made my spirits high! I just wanted to say I love you and I would snag you but I guess "Chris" won't like that, haha. Love your work!!
Could you eat that cake?! Yeah, me either. It’s too sweet to destroy or throw away. He thinks I’m nuts for keeping it for so long. I guess I’m just a sentimental ol’ fool sometimes. Haha.
And yes, I’m remember you from the chat! First Halloween sounds exciting. We loooooove Halloween. We’ve already started shopping for it. Haha. I hope your first one is great. It’s a very fun, carefree holiday that you can just enjoy and have a good time with.
"Chris" is pretty possessive, yes. Haha. But that’s very nice of you to say. We won’t tell him ;-)
For those who’ve wondered how all of these people just seem to have come together, get this…
I trained two new employees at work earlier this week. I’d never met either of them before they started working here. Today I found out that one of them used to work with “Brandon” at the university. As if that wasn’t crazy enough, they’re still friends and this new employee not only hangs out with my friend “Brandon”, but has been to dinner at “Brandon” and “Gedeon’s” house about half a dozen times.
How’s that for a small world?
Who knows… maybe I’ll have to add a new character to the mix eventually. Haha.
The last question I answered, which the author referred to as “silly”, inspired me (it wasn’t a silly question, though… it was a good one!). Since I have nothing else planned to publish this weekend, let’s do some Q&A.
If you all are up for it, that is.
What silly question do you have? What weird, strange, or insignificant details are you curious about? Anything you really want to know but haven’t asked in the past? Anything you’d like more elaboration on? How accurate to real life is some event, person, place, or thing? How much of something is non-fiction vs. fiction?
You get the idea, right?
Your question can be about any of the three installments, not just this one. I’ll compile them together and publish them all Sunday afternoon/evening-ish, completely anonymously. So feel free to ask whatever is on your mind (although try to keep it remotely appropriate… haha).
Do you know of any other stories that are similar to yours both in publishing and theme? I love your stories and part of that is the way they are published-like a TV series, I wait around for days until I can find out what happens. That said, I don't mean to sound like I want a new story or author- just more than one!
I’m almost ashamed to admit how little I know about other stories on Tumblr. I know some exist and I used to follow a couple. But they all seem to have stopped updating. Conner used to write on several and he still has a list of other stories on his site (although I don’t know how up-to-date it is). I know of a couple that are/were planned, but haven’t heard that they’ve started yet.
Feel free to share any good ones and I’ll pass them along!
I just spent three nights in a row reading all three stories. To echo all the other comments, you are an awesome writer. I'm also glad the crossover is RLfic. Knowing these stories are real is what makes them so powerful to me.
You read them all at once?! Wow! Thank you. That means a lot! I haven’t even done that in a while myself. Haha. I assume “RLfic” means real life fiction? Good description! I always say 85% non-fiction/15% fiction, so RLfic is a great way to describe it! Thank you again for the nice message. I’m glad you’re enjoying them and I hope you continue to do so!
I just gotta say something before i ask a question, you're like my writing idol. I'm serious. I love your writing more than any other author's work I've ever read. im sorry but i just seriously love you and your writing fmgkutfgft Now onto the question, how do you remember the conversations you guys have? Like honestly, im trying to write a story based on a part of my life but im having trouble remembering the conversations. Help??
Well, before I answer your question, I just gotta say that I am:
about your message and kind words! I’m not even sure that list does justice to how this made me feel. Ever? Really??? That’s not possible, is it? Haha. Thank you - seriously. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m rarely speechless… but I don’t even know what else to say.
On to the question…
Conversations are tough. In fact, a big part of the reason I’ve always said these are 85% non-fiction/15% fiction is because of the dialog. Some conversations you legitimately do remember word-for-word, be it because they occurred with someone special or because they had to do with something special… maybe they made you laugh or cry or experience some other emotion. Those are easy because you only have to fill in the little bits - you can remember the important parts.
As for the rest, well… in my opinion, the individual words themselves aren’t as important as what they’re expressing. Did I say “hell no!” during that conversation or did I say “I think not!” isn’t really the main reason for writing through dialog - the fact that I said “no” in some way is. So what I do is take a few factors into consideration and then run with it:
Who’s talking? What do they sound like? What little quirks or idioms or patterns of speech do they frequently use? What sort of dialect and/or accent do they use? How does their speech flow?
With that, you can imagine how a conversation about almost anything would go in your head. Combine that with the story you’re trying to tell, and you can craft a dialog that might not be word-for-word what was said, but it could have been. You don’t even have to be present to be able to create dialog like that!
So, if you’re trying to write about conversations you were actually a part of, it should be easy if you don’t worry about nailing every single word exactly how it was spoken, but instead, try to focus on the main point of the conversation. What was significant about the conversation that makes it worth writing about? Who expressed what emotion or thought or idea? Knowing what you know about them, how would they have expressed those thoughts or ideas?
Toss in the answers to those other questions from above about how they literally speak (and a little artistic liberty) and presto: dialog.
Main point: it doesn’t have to be exact as long as it gets the message across.
I threw together a new page today to list and link to “the soundtrack” of these stories (as I’m calling it). It’s a list of music that has appeared throughout the series with a link to the song on YouTube and a link to the post it was mentioned it.
Maybe someone has already asked you, but since this story is so popular, why don't you publish it?
I’d probably have to take it down from here if I were to publish it through someone else and I don’t really want to do that. They don’t typically like to publish freely-available works. I might self-publish it in some digital format when it’s done, just to give folks the ability to read it without Tumblr if they so choose.
Tonight, tonight! By the way, is there a specific time you post these stories so that I don't have to keep stopping by your page every 30 minutes or so? Because it's like waiting for a new television episode to come out every day or so :)
It’s funny… I ALMOST posted the music video for “Tonight, Tonight” by the Smashing Pumpkins earlier today. Haha. But yes, there’s a specific time. Unless something happens, all posts are scheduled to go out at 7pm CST. That’s in about an hour and a half :-)
Looking like tomorrow for sure. I’m really not loving the first post. What follows, different story. I’m just not a fan of how it starts off. So I’m gonna be deep in rewrite mode tonight to try and get it ready for tomorrow.
Don’t hate me TOO much. It’s this, or crap. And nobody wants crap, right?
Okay let me see if I have this correct. These stories are about 85% true. Now the main character from the first series is based off of you. Your name is never mentioned in the first series. Now based off of a post I saw explaining who Brian is (by a fan), I'm assuming your the person Brian is based off of. I guess there is some irony in this, based off my last post were I was wondering who Brian was, I was talking to him. Am I correct or not?
You are 100% correct. The character of Brian is based off of me. So yeah, you were talking to “him”… haha. Part of that 15% of fictional leeway I granted myself was a new name, though :-P
Who the heck is Brian? I don't remember him at all from the first series. For the longest time since you sent out that teaser I thought he was Ben, but then I was like 'Ben is straight.' Note: I'm not all the way through the second series yet, 75% of the way there.
Well, if you’re still working on the second installment, then you haven’t got to that part yet. Haha. Brian was most definitely in the first installment. He just didn’t have a name then… (hint, hint)
Some folks have asked how the cross-over bits in part three are going to work. As an example, I thought I’d share a quick glimpse at the first post with those of you who are interested enough to be following this blog, too:
The last thing Brian expected to be doing when he woke up was standing in his bedroom in front of a complete stranger in nothing but his underwear. He’d woke up knowing it was going to be a different type of Sunday than he was used to. He’d known there would be some uncharted territory and maybe an awkward moment or two. But this was more than he’d bargained for. He hadn’t planned for this at all.
“They match your eyes”, Trevor snickered from the doorway to Brian’s room. He’d propped himself against the frame and watched, even knowing that the entire reason Brian had gone down there was to change clothes. “I bet you planned that to impress me.”
“I thought we’d already established that we weren’t trying to impress one another?”
“No, I said I wasn’t trying to impress you. You’re clearly trying to impress me with this whole eye color underwear matching thing.” Trevor rotated on his shoulder and turned to walk back down the hall with another laugh. “It’s gonna take more than that, man”, he called loudly as he made his way to the living room to wait.
As of right now, that’s the first couple of paragraphs from the first post. You might recall that at the end of “In The Market” - where Brian and Trevor meet for the first time - they leave the farmer’s market to go for a run together. The first post of part three is what happens after they leave the market.
Hopefully you agree or the first 20 or so posts from part three are going to suck for you… haha.
I don’t want to sound like I’m tooting my own horn or anything, but I think ya’ll are really going to enjoy the third installment of this story! Not only is everyone back together again, but I’m bringing back some of the varied posting styles (videos, music, conversations) from the first one.
In fact, I’ve just finished putting the first post into Tumblr in draft mode so I can check out the embedding code and… well… it’s a really cool post if I do say so myself.
OK… enough blowing smoke up my own ass. I’m just really excited for everyone to see! Can’t wait!
Thank you to everyone who stopped by for the chat last night. As always, it was a blast and I really enjoyed getting to chat with some of you. I stayed up way past my bedtime, but it was completely worth it. Haha. Ya’ll are just awesome. So again, thank you!
OK… let’s do this chat thing. 9pm, Central Standard Time. For the rest of the world, that’s about 3hrs and 10 minutes from now. I’ll stick around for a while so pop in if you can. They’ve always been a blast in the past.
I’ll post the link when it’s ready to go. Hope to see some of you there!
To (hopefully) time the remaining updates in the No One I Love Will Ever Love Me story to end on a Friday, I’m planning to push an extra update this weekend. So instead of one today and one Sunday, I’m going to post on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I’ll probably do the same thing next weekend, too (unless I’ve miscounted something).
Ya’ll don’t mind three posts this weekend, do you?
Also, I’m hoping to be able to have another chat tonight (Friday, February 8, 2013, CST). I’ll post the details and a link a little later this evening as I get the exact time nailed down, but I’m thinking 9pm-ish, Central Standard Time. More info to come this afternoon.
Happy Friday & and I hope your weekend is a great one!
